Course Duration: 1 Week to 6 Months


Course Aims:

•    Provide a comprehensive overview of the film and television industry, covering various roles and departments.
•    Develop functional skills and knowledge necessary for entry-level positions in directing, producing, makeup, stage design, screenwriting, camera operation, sound engineering, digital media, and commissioning.
•    Foster creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking skills required for success in the industry.
•    Prepare participants for further specialisation or entry-level employment opportunities in the film and television industry.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:


•    Demonstrate a basic understanding of the roles and responsibilities of various positions in film and television industry.
•    Apply functional skills and techniques in directing, producing, makeup, stage design, screenwriting, camera operation, sound engineering, digital media, and commissioning.
•    Collaborate effectively within a production team and understand the importance of communication and co-ordination in the production process.
•    Analyse and evaluate various elements of film and television production, including storytelling, technical aspects, and audience engagement.
•    Develop a portfolio or showcase their work in each module to demonstrate acquired skills and knowledge.

Introduction to Film and Television Industry


1.    Overview of the film and television industry and its various departments
2.    Understanding the production process and roles within a production team
3.    Exploring current trends, challenges, and opportunities in the industry


Directing:


1.    Understanding the role of a director in film and television production
2.    Exploring the creative process and visual storytelling techniques
3.    Basics of shot composition, camera angles, and framing
4.    Effective communication with cast and crew
5.    Planning and organising a scene or sequence for film vignettes


Producing:


1.    Role and responsibilities of a producer in film and television projects
2.    Budgeting, scheduling, and resource management
3.    Legal and contractual considerations
4.    Fundraising and financing strategies
5.    Production coordination and logistics


Makeup:


1.    Understanding the importance of makeup in character development
2.    Basic makeup techniques for different genres and styles
3.    Special effects makeup and prosthetics
4.    Makeup continuity and on-set touch-ups
5.    Collaborating with the director and production team to achieve the desired look


Stage Design:


1.    Overview of stage design in film and television production
2.    Elements of set design, including props, lighting, and colour schemes
3.    Utilising space and creating visually appealing sets
4.    Working with set builders, decorators, and other production departments
5.    Safety considerations and regulations in set design


Screenwriting:


1.    Understanding the fundamentals of storytelling for screenwriting
2.    Developing engaging characters, plotlines, and dialogue
3.    Exploring different genres and formats
4.    Mastering screenplay formatting and structure
5.    Receiving feedback and guidance on writing assignments


Camera Operation:


1.    Introduction to camera equipment and operation
2.    Framing, composition, and camera movement techniques
3.    Lighting and exposure principles for camera work
4.    Handheld mobile phones and cutting-edge film equipment for camera operation
5.    Practical exercises to practice camera operation skills


Sound Engineering:


1.    Introduction to sound recording and mixing techniques
2.    Understanding different types of microphones and their applications
3.    Sound editing and post-production processes
4.    Importance of sound design and its impact on storytelling
5.    Collaboration with other departments for optimal sound production


Digital Media:


1.    Overview of digital media's role in film and television production
2.    Introduction to editing software and technique
3.    Introduction to digital content platform compliance
4.    Monetisation of content across the social and digital platforms 
5.    Digital media and marketing opportunities for content creators

Assessment:

3 half day practical assessments and coursework and ongoing assignments


Throughout the practical assessment, students will be evaluated based on their ability to collaborate effectively with the awarding body, demonstrate leadership skills, and execute their assigned roles with competence and professionalism. A1 Assessors, including industry professionals or experienced instructors, will provide guidance and feedback during the various stages of the film production process.

(1)    Access to Foundation Degrees in Film and TV Production:

 

This is a great option to further your education and gain specialised knowledge in film and TV production. Foundation degrees provide a solid foundation in the field and can open up more advanced career opportunities.

(2)    Higher Courses in Specialisms:

 

You can consider pursuing higher courses in specific specialisations such as makeup, rigging, sound engineering, or camera operation. These specialised courses will enhance your skills in a particular area and make you more marketable for jobs in those fields.


(3)    Apprenticeship Schemes:

 

Major broadcasters and streamers offer apprenticeship schemes, which provide a combination of practical work experience and formal training. These schemes allow you to work alongside industry professionals while learning on the job. They can be a valuable stepping stone to a successful career in the industry.

(4)    Employment Opportunities:

 

Working with a wide range of production companies within the Distant Voices Partnership Programme (DVGPP) can help you build a strong network and gain valuable experience. The student will have the opportunity to apply for positions such as production assistant, assistant camera operator, sound technician, or other entry-level roles.
