The Board of Governors 

Finding Inspiration in Every Turn

Chaired by Professor Jay Johnson, the Distant Voices Academy board of directors is made up of leading industry figures who guide every aspect of DVA's work.

​

The board is responsible for delivering DVA's aims and in doing so is required to:

​

  • Ensure that the organisation fulfils the legal requirements as a Registered Charity and Company

  • Act as Directors of the Company and Trustees of the Charity

  • Set and agree DVA's  overall corporate strategy and governance structure

  • Provide a support and challenge function to DVA's Founders and members of the Executive Team as appropriate

  • Define the appetite for risk and the framework within which the Executive Team can operate

  • Support, monitor and evaluate DVA's and its Executive Team’s performance

  • To approve sector strategies and action plans recommended by the Skills​ Council and monitor their achievement through the receipt of regular progress reports

  • Identify and promote opportunities for co-ordination and co-operation across the sectors/nations in relation to skills

  • Provide opportunities for sectors and nations to raise opportunities, issues, risks and developments, and to be responsive to the changing needs of the sectors and nations under DVA's remit

  • Advocate, lobby and promote DVA's work and interests across our sectors and at government level.

Film Student

The Distant Voices Academy charity plays a crucial role in our society by providing a platform for the next generation to thrive and develop their talents. The organisation's governance structure is designed to ensure effective leadership and direction, with a diverse group of exemplary advisors from various sectors.

This includes a leading European barrister, executives from the film and media industry, the CEO of the largest global casting agency. By bringing together such a diverse range of expertise, the charity can benefit from the valuable insights and experiences of these influential individuals. Moreover, the inclusion of a young apprentice on the board emphasises the organisation's commitment to fostering the growth and development of future talent.

This approach not only allows for fresh perspectives but also ensures that the voices of the youth are heard and considered in shaping the direction of the organisation. By focusing on development and creating opportunities for the next generation, the Distant Voices Academy is making a significant impact in enabling young individuals to thrive in their chosen fields.
